Variety Reviews “The Unforeseen”

We were honestly beside ourselves when we read Robert Koehler’s review in Variety

Observing locally and thinking globally, Laura Dunn’s astonishing debut doc feature “The Unforeseen” is the kind of transformative viewing experience that has made the current period a golden age for nonfiction film. Pic takes the history and battles over development and sprawl in Austin, Texas, and launches into a visual, scientific and philosophic rumination of humanity’s place on the planet and the limits to growth. Fests will scramble for this prestige title, and bigscreen values demand a theatrical run.

Whatever Bubbles Bubbles Up

The Unforeseen details the real estate boom and bust of the 1980’s. Those of you with eyes to see will notice something else has been bubbling up in the last few months.

Kyle Cooper, Title Design in Austin

Kyle Cooper (of Prologue Films) generously donated his enormous talents to provide The Unforeseen a beautiful, haunting opening titles and closing “cosmic zoom” sequence. Alamo Drafthouse honors his work on Tuesday, April 10 with Kyle making a live appearance. If you live in Austin and love movies, you’d be crazy not to come.

It’s a beautiful, soulful work about real estate development and sprawl, focused on Austin’s beloved Barton Springs, and if you think that’s impossible you haven’t seen it…. “The Unforeseen” is much more than a plucky local movie about issues that matter only in this delightful, self-obsessed collegiate boomtown.

A former Austinite wrote this review.

Both the message and the struggle are applicable all over the world, and as the population continues to grow, and we start to develop every square inch on the planet, it is an issue that will only get more attention in the coming years.
