Vancouver!
I hear so much about the beautiful city of Vancouver that I imagine it must be a bit like Austin — the natural landscapes and vibrant culture ensure its spot on the “best places to live” map. So then we all move there, and, in turn, alter (for better or for worse?) the very landscape/culture that lured us. A troublesome pattern indeed….
Nonetheless, we’re very pleased to share that this year’s 2007 Vancouver Film Festival will feature “The Unforeseen” as part of their new Kyoto Planet environmental series. The festival runs from September 27 to October 12 with exact screening times/dates to be announced.

“Parched Spanish Coast Taps Sea Water for Growth”
While driving early this morning, I was struck by an NPR report on real estate speculation/development along Spain’s once pristine coastline. The political rhetoric around “economic growth”, scientific reports on vast ecological destruction of a semi-arid climate, a golf course developer’s environmentally-sensitive spin….I was amazed at how, despite being worlds away from central Texas, we witness the EXACT same fractal emerging. But what I can’t seem to get my mind around is how anyone anywhere can call these environmental (and social/cultural) impacts of short-sighted debt-fueled real estate speculation “unforeseen consequences”. This report is worth listening to.
Lousiville, KY screening….
Kentuckians For The Commonwealth, a grassroots social justice organization with 4,500 members statewide, will present a special screening of “The Unforeseen” on August 24th at the Kentucky Center for the Performing Arts in Louisville, KY. KFTC member and organizer Ellyn Crutcher, who envisions the film as a catalyst for community dialogue on issues affecting Kentuckians and their landscape, writes:
The film speaks eloquently to the challenges we face here in Kentucky where we struggle to protect our natural resources in the face of formidable opposition. The integrity of our water supply is endangered on many fronts, and our precious bluegrass is threatened by sprawl, while our mountains are being destroyed by mining. By beginning a dialogue and working together we can create economic and environmentally sustainable alternatives that insure a better quality of life for all Kentuckians.
